Spectral observations of the discrete hot spots and amorphous region found in the nucleus of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1097 are presented and discussed. Slit spectra were obtained of four spot-containing regions of the galactic nucleus in the wavelength region 3700-4400 A by an SIT Vidicon spectrograph on the CTIO 4-m telescope. Examination of the ratios of the equivalent widths of selected absorption features indicates that the light from the hot spots is dominated by stars of spectral types F0 to F4, while the light from the amorphous nuclear region is dominated by stars of spectral types K1 to K9. The observed features are noted to be fairly typical of hot spot galaxies
