The relation between zodiacal light and the physical properties of interplanetary dust particles is examined. Two methods for analyzing the near forward light scattered from interplanetary dust particles, the anomalous diffraction approximation (ADA) of van de Hulst (1957) and the high energy approximation (HEA) of Perrin and Lamy (1983) and Chiapetta (1980), are evaluated. Various examples in which ADA and HEA are applied to nonabsorbing, weakly absorbing, and highly absorbing interplanetary dust particles are presented. It is noted that ADA is the more suitable method for analyzing scattered light.
