The heliostat is defined and the reason for this study is given. After presenting the heliostat principle some practical arrangements are outlined and the important degenerate forms, the polar heliostat and the coelostat, are derived. The confusion of nomenclature and its relation to field rotation is discussed. Some notes on the utilisation and the limitations of single mirror arrangements are concluded with a statement of the need for two mirror systems and a reference to the heliograph.
