The decay-versus-period relation for known pulsars suggests that the quadrupole radiation may represent one of the most important slow-down mechanisms in such objects. This view does not contradict the observed data, but raises question of the nature and the source of the quadrupole moment. The aim of this letter is to propose how the alternative between a dipole and quadrupole nature of radiation from the Crab pulsar could possibly be decided on the basis of the observed slow-down of its pulse rate.
