The possibility of star formation by gravitational fragmentation is
considered. There is a lower limit for the mass of a fragment, which is
defined by the cooling mechanism and opacity. The minimum mass obtained
coincides with the stellar mass for the contemporary conditions as well
as for ones for the formation of stars of the first generation.
