The sigma-stability concept is applied to aligned magnetoatmospheric
flow, using the atmosphere chosen by Nye and Thomas (1976a, b) as an
illustrative example. A sufficient condition for sigma-stability is
derived, and the upper bound arising from this condition is investigated
as a function of sigma.
