The rate matrix that arises when considering statistical equilibrium is usually solved iteratively in radiative transfer theory. We discuss here a theorem stating conditions under which a certain version of the matrix is guaranteed positive solutions. This may have applications to improving the iterative methods commonly used to solve the radiation transfer problem.
