We develop a weakly nonlinear theory for the growth of optically thin perturbations to a plane-parallel chromosphere-like layer described by the MHD equations in an attempt to explain the dynamics of solar spicules. Damping of the perturbations is by Newton's law of cooling and the magnetic field is assumed to be vertical. The theory leads to a nonlinear PDE that describes the time evolution of perturbations to the layer. Numerical results are presented.
