We propose a new physical model for the unification of all Blazars. The blazar phenomenology can be accounted for by a sequence in the source power and intensity of the diffuse radiation field surrounding the relativistic jet. This regulates the intensity of the diffuse radiation surrounding the jet, determining the equilibrium electron distribution and hence the shape of the spectral energy distribution (SED), and in turn the classification into a blazar ``flavour". The processes inside and beside the emitting jet are the same throughout the blazar class. Objects along this sequence would be observationally classified as high-frequency BL Lac objects, low-frequency BL Lac objects, highly polarized quasars and lowly polarized quasars. The proposed scheme is based on the relations among the physical parameters derived by applying to 53 gamma -ray loud blazars two of the most accepted scenarios for the broad band emission of blazars (synchrotron self--Compton and external Compton models), and on the observational trends found from the study of the properties of SEDs (radio to gamma -rays) for three complete-samples: Slew Survey and 1Jy samples of BL Lacs, and the 2Jy sample of Flat Spectrum Radio-Loud Quasars (FSRQs). We computed average SEDs dividing sources in luminosity bins. Our findings can be summarized as follows: i) blazars SEDs have two peaks, whose frequency ratio is compatible with being constant. The lower energy one, ranging between 10(13) and 10(17) Hz, shows an anti-correlation with luminosity. ii) the gamma --ray dominance increases with increasing power. iii) blazar continua can be described as a family of curves with luminosity as the fundamental parameter. These trends suggest that we deal with a continuous spectral sequence favoring a unified view of the blazar phenomenon with a single parameter, related to luminosity, governing the physical properties and radiation mechanisms in the relativistic jets.
