We are in the process of creating a new Mars GCM that will extend from the planetary surface to altitudes of about 500 km, thus coupling the lower and upper atmospheres. This paper presents a status report on the model, which currently extends from the top of Olympus Mons into the thermosphere. Predicted temperatures and composition are compared with data and other models. Further development needs and plans will be discussed. Eventually, the model will explicitly include interactions between the ground and the atmosphere, such as gas phase and dust particle exchange between the two regions, and the effects of topography.
