The location of a globular cluster X-ray source in equilibrium with the cluster potential depends on the source mass. An absolute likelihood method has been developed to statistically determine the mass of the typical globular cluster X-ray source, given a data set of measured positions and measurement errors for a number of sources. The method employs the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, which is generalized to incorporate varying relative measurement errors in the observations, and may have a variety of physical applications. Minimal criteria required of a data set to usefully distinguish between hypotheses are given. The methods are illustrated for the X-ray source mass problem with simulated data sets generated by single-component King potentials, by two-component 'core-within-a-core' King potentials, and by a mixture of X-ray source masses.
