The meaning and relevance of the variance of the estimate of the covariance function (VEC) is discussed. A new type of measure is proposed and some of its consequences are derived within the framework of the hierarchical model of galaxy clustering. In conclusion it is emphasized that the present procedure can either offer an independent measure of galaxy clustering or an additional way to compute the universal constants a and b which appear in the expression of 4-point correlation.
