A comparison method for determining radial velocities of binary components is developed which is based on the sum of the absolute values of the differences of the densities or intensities at shifted wavelengths. The wavelength shift is determined from the minimum of the resulting curve. The method can treat major portions of the spectra simultaneously, and can deal with noisy data. Thus, it is especially useful for the spectra of hot luminous stars.
