The widely used Potential-Field Source-Surface (PFSS) model describes many coronal and heliospheric features and is especially useful during the solar minimum phase when the large-scale structures are relatively steady. In the standard PFSS model, a spherical boundary (the source surface) is set at 2.5 solar radii where all field lines are made to be open and radial. Generally the results in the ecliptic are not particularly sensitive to the precise height and various investigations have shown that the modeling results agree well with observations during the past minima and maxima as well. Nevertheless, as the current minimum phase shows different features from the past several minima (larger mid-latitude coronal holes, a weaker polar field, a decrease in the interplanetary magnetic field, etc.), the height of the source surface may need to be adjusted. The new approach is likely to yield better results and suggest how the PFSS should be tuned under different circumstances.
