A least-squares method is applied to derive a variational principle which can be used to calculate the precessional of the perihelion of Mercury to a high degree of accuracy. The sum of residual squares from the present solution are compared with those from the classical solution in a table. The importance of the precession of Mercury as an observational test of the theory of general relativity is indicated.
