The authors present data for a new sample of optically selected quasars. The "standard" multicolor technique for selecting quasar candidates has been applied to all the objects brighter than J = 22.0 in a field of 0.69 deg2. Additional candidates have been selected from a search on grism plates obtained in the same area and through a variability analysis on two sets of plates taken one year apart from each other. Slit spectroscopy for all the high priority candidates brighter than J = 20.9 has provided a sample of 23 confirmed quasars. Within his magnitude limit colour and grism selections have been about equally successful in selecting quasars. The surface density of quasars from the authors' sample is in good agreement with recently published data in the magnitude range J = 20.0 - 22.0. The redshift distribution is approximately flat in the redshift range 0.6-2.8. Among the objects with spectroscopic data, those which show prominent emission lines at z < 0.6 can be classified as narrow emission line objects. At the other extreme of the redshift space, no quasar with z > 2.8 has been found so far in this sample.
