A new resonance is found in the case of a vertical magnetic field and for the low-beta plasma present in the corona and upper chromosphere of the quiet sun and at lower altitudes in regions of high magnetic field strength associated with sunspots, active regions, and intense flux tubes. The resonance exists between the usual fast MHD wave and a gravity-modified acoustic wave. The fast wave acts as a source term for the acoustic wave and at resonance the acoustic wave is driven by the fast wave in such a way that very large vertical motions are driven by the horizontal motions which constitute the fast wave. Applications of this resonance to solar spicules, 'jets', and other phenomena are discussed.
