A photographic method for the digital processing of the two-dimensional density distribution of the lunar eclipse shadow is presented, and is demonstrated with the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory observation of the December 30, 1982 eclipse. The terrestrial shadow is extracted using immediate posteclipses or preeclipse full lunar images as a reference template, and resulting shadow map uncertainties in density of 0.03-0.05, and in position of 10-15 arcsec, are obtained. From the data, isodensity contours of the penumbra indicate unknown systematic deviations from the geometrical shadow model, in terms of their shadow center direction and radii of curvature. The observed density variation in the outer umbra is found to be consistent with lidar and aircraft optical depth measurements. It is suggested that remnant aerosols flown up by a Mexican volcano eight months prior to the eclipse may be responsible for the formation of the outer penumbra density variations.
