In the lead-up to the SKA it is important to continue pushing the limits of pulsar timing precision and to improve our understanding of the pulsar emission mechanism. We propose to conduct pilot observations using the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA) in order to develop extensions to the existing VLBI software correlator, DiFX, that will allow it to form a phased array beam (instead of an image) centred on a compact source. The combined antennas of the Australian LBA offer the maximum total collecting area of any radio telescope in the Southern hemisphere, providing a unique opportunity to boost sensitivity.
