The construction and instruments of the new San Pedro Martir Observatory in the remote mountains of Baja California are discussed. Developments in Mexican astronomy leading to the decision to build an observatory in the rugged, high-altitude area of the San Pedro mountains are reviewed, and the construction of the original observatory which includes a 1.5-m infrared telescope and an 84-cm yoke-mounted telescope by 1971 is outlined. The installation of a 2.12-m telescope and the dedication of the observatory in 1979 are considered, with particular attention given to the prototype 2.12-m reflector, which was built at a total cost of only $1,300,000. Advantages of arrays of smaller telescopes such as the 2.12-m reflector over larger, more expensive single telescopes are also pointed out.
