New ground-based techniques for mapping and tracking large-scale variations of plasma density in the solar wind have shown that disturbances responsible for geomagnetic storms and proton showers may be detected at a distance of 0.6 a.u. from the sun. Continuous observations made during 1978-1979 indicate that the application of this method should lead to substantial improvements in the reliability, and lead-time, of forecasts of geomagnetic activity.
