After discussing the method by which interferograms are presently digitized with a PDS microphotometer and then analyzed automatically to yield radial velocity fields, a comparison is made with results obtained from a manually measured interferogram. It is found that the novel, automatic method, which works at constant dispersion and is more rapid and convenient than the manual one, presents a satisfactory alternative. The shortcomings inherent in all such methods are noted, and attention is given to the improved instrumentation and reduction procedures which are becoming available.
