Determining whether magnetic field reconnection does or does not occur within a current sheet in space is difficult because signatures such as the quadrupolar out-of-plane magnetic field (BY), normal magnetic field (bX), ion jet in the outflow region, etc. may or may not occur in the presence or absence of reconnection. While direct electric and magnetic field measurements offer additional information, the field components that are necessary and sufficient for reconnection, which are a non-zero normal magnetic field (bX) and tangential electric field (eY and/or eZ), are usually small compared to the normal electric field (EX), out-of-plane magnetic field (BY) and reconnection magnetic field (BZ). So they are sometimes difficult to determine because of uncertainties in both the measurements and the required coordinate transformations. From analyses of the correlations between the large and easily measured EX, BY and BZ that are imposed by the condition that the average parallel electric field is zero on the ion scale, a method is developed to determine that bX, eY, and/or eZ are non-zero and to estimate their sizes. Applications of this method to data at the sub-solar magnetopause will be presented.
