A technique for close-encounter dynamics computation between a planet and a minor object has been developed. Such a technique is based on Greenspan's (1973) discrete mechanics, whose main feature is the exact conservation of the invariants of motion for a dynamical system. Many kinds of close interaction can be treated with this method, such as collisions, temporary satellite captures, ejections from the solar system, and orbital evolutions over a long time period. With some minor modifications, the method described may also be used to treat some other general cases, such as interactions with two or more planets, interactions among bodies of comparable mass, accumulation of small bodies in a jet stream, and so on.
