We present a new luminosity function for type II supernovae. Our luminosity function is calculated without any assumptions as to the form of the function, and has been weighted by the detectivity of the supernovae and the inverse of the volume in which the supernova could have been detected. In contrast to previous results, our luminosity function shows that low-luminosity type II supernovae (such as SN 1987A) are the most common type of type II supernovae.
