A new kinematic analysis of the broad line region in QSOs, demonstrates that it is a necessary consequence of the standard model assuming ballistic outflow that emission lines should be both broad and asymmetric, as observed. Using a number of simplifying assumptions line shapes of C IV in 1330 + 170 and Q0122 - 380 and the general form of Ly-alpha emission are reproduced.
