A compositional model is proposed to explain the internal structure of the earth. The model is based on observations of the chemical compositions of various regions of the solar system as represented by the sun, earth, moon and meteorites, which reveal that relative elemental abundances depend on elemental ionization potentials. The distribution of elements of different ionization potentials in the protosolar nebula is explained in terms of a magnetic separation process leading to the prevalence of elements with greater potentials in the outer solar system, from which the original composition of the earth is estimated to correspond to hydrogen compounds (hydrides). The model predicts that, following condensation out of the protoplanetary matter into a compact body with a large metal hydride core surrounded by a layer of metal containing dissolved hydrogen, the earth core hydrides gradually dissociate, resulting in an increase in radius and the formation of a thick silicide and thin silicate outer layers surrounding the metallic core in the present stage of evolution, and an eventual structure corresponding to a silicide mantle overlain by a thin silicate crust, as found in the moon and Mars.
