The luminosity profile of the compact elliptical galaxy NGC 4486B, companion of M87, follows with a reasonable accuracy a King profile having a tidal radius of 27arcsec. An estimate of its mass can be derived from that of M32. The use of the revised classical von Hoerner's formula in which M87 has a distributed mass M(r) ∝ r+1.3, leads to a mass M > 5.2×1012M_sun; in the central 7arcmin.3 of M87 and to a corresponding M/Lv > 58 for an adopted distance of 15 Mpc. A conservative assumption of a point mass would have given M > 3.3×1012M_sun; and M/Lv > 38. These results are in excellent agreement with estimates of the M87 mass from recent X-ray observations.
