High-resolution spectra of the Na D and H alpha lines for 29 stars in the globular clusters omega Cen and M22 are discussed, which provide important information concerning the atmospheres of cluster giants. H alpha emission is positively identified in approximately 70 per cent of the stars. It is suggested that the Na D lines may be an important diagnostic for determining mass motions in the stellar atmospheres. At QUB we are presently involved in an ongoing study of the fine-scale structure of interstellar material in the foreground to bright stars in globular clusters. Optical spectra have been presented for the clusters M22 (Bates \& Catney 1991) and omega Centauri (Bates et al. 1992). These spectra contain the stellar Na D and H alpha lines. We report here results of an observational programme dealing specifically with these lines in 29 stars (see also Bates et al. 1993). 29 spectra were obtained in 1989 September and 1990 May using the University College London coude echelle spectrograph (UCLES) at the Anglo-Australian telescope with a velocity resolution (FWHM) ~ 6 km/s. Reduction and analysis were carried out at the NI Starlink node at QUB using the Starlink packages FIGARO and DIPSO.
