A method to determine shifts between stellar spectra, based on the sum of the absolute values of the differences of the intensities is proposed. A minimum of the objective function is sought, and it becomes much easier to determine the optimal wavelength shift. The method is robust against inaccuracies in the data, making it especially appropriate to analyze fuzzy data. The method was tested on artificial profiles as well as on the spectrum of Beta Arietis and the light curve an AI Velorum star. In all cases it compares favorably with the classical approach.
