We propose to use the intensity ratio of the Fe XIV 5303 and Fe X 6374 Angstrom emission lines to study the temperature inhomogeneity in the inner solar corona. For this purpose, based on this ratio, we introduce a new coronal index CEM, whose value reflects the relative fractions of the `hot' and `cold' coronal matter. We propose to use an extended time series of the values of CEM to analyze the temperature variations in the solar corona and their relation to other physical parameters of the Sun.
