The DIRECT project aims to determine direct distances to two important galaxies in the cosmological distance ladder -- M31 and M33 -- using detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) and Cepheids. Three 11' x 11' fields were observed in the B, V and I bands on 95 nights at the FLWO 1.2-m and on 36 nights at the MDM 1.3-m telescopes during the 1996 and 1997 seasons. Analysis of this data set has resulted in the discovery of more than eight hundred variables, including over 350 Cepheids with periods ranging from 3 to 80 days. We present a Cepheid distance to M33 based on a subset of these variables, and discuss future research on the Cepheid Distance Scale to be carried out using these and other DIRECT M33 Cepheids.
