We report the spectrophotometric observation of a new cataclysmic variable star J 05.23, discovered as a by-product of the Calan-Tololo Survey of quasars and Seyfert galaxies. From the ESO Quick Blue Chart we estimated a B magnitude of about 17.5. The spectrum between 3200 and 6500 A shows strong emission in the He I 5876 A, H-beta, H-gamma, and H-delta lines, with FWHM of about 2200 km/s. Several lines, particularly He I 5876 A and H-beta exhibit double-peaked profiles, with a separation of about 1000 km/s.
