On 2004 July 31 the Japanese amateur Koichi Itagaki, using a 0.6m
reflector, discovered a bright supernova in the galaxy NGC 2403. Details
were circulated to members in BAA electronic circular no.0156. The
supernova, a type IIp and designated SN 2004dj, was at mag 11.2 at
discovery and remained bright for many days after.
