A previously unknown compact galaxy of integrated magnitude about 12.4 has been discovered as a variable star on Asiago Schmidt telescope plates. Large scale photographs and spectra have revealed that this remarkable object is an extremely compact blue galaxy with a strong continuum, emission and absorption lines, at a redshift z equals 0.09 (absolute magnitude of about -21.4 if H equals 50 km/s Mpc, diameter 3 kpc). The spectral characteristics resemble those of galaxies rich of early type stars. The variability, however, if confirmed by other observations, would have been detected here for the first time on such systems.
