A simple model is described which provides a two-dimensional background estimate purely from ON source data taken with the HEGRA CT-System. The idea is that the background be estimated using a subset of events in the mean-scaled width regime (1.4 to 1.6). Example data illustrates the performance of this idea, comparing it to conventional background models, namely, dedicated OFF source data and nodding mode OFF data. A feature of this model is that for extended and unlocalised point source studies, no dedicated OFF source observations are required. .
