This paper proposes a new approximation to the real part of the nonrelativistic plasma dispersion function, which is complementary to the approximations proposed earlier by Sazhin (1986, 1987, 1988, 1989), Sazhin and Sazhina (1988), and Horne and Sazhin (1990). On the basis of the new approximation, a new approximate expression for whistler-mode refractive index is derived for the case of wave propagation parallel to the magnetic field in a hot anisotropic and dense plasma. It is shown that, in certain cases, this expression is more convenient for practical applications than are other expressions.
