The analysis of topside incoherent scatter data is both complicated and of uncertain accuracy because of the large number of parameters involved. To simplify the problem, most previous analyses have been restricted to conditions involving equal electron and ion temperatures, and have not been capable of providing estimates of the errors in the fitted parameters. The method of analysis presented here can treat the most general situation; it provides best estimates of the fitted parameters (electron and ion temperatures, and hydrogen, helium and oxygen densities) and also estimates of their standard deviations. In essence, the procedure is a least-squares gradient search, analyzing experimental autocorrelation functions directly. In its details it has been designed for use with data obtained from the Arecibo Observatory. On leave from the Centre for Radio Science, University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada.
