The paper examines the use of the biharmonic analysis method to construct planetary and regional maps of foF2 (F2-critical frequency) distribution. The advantages of this method are described, and it is compared with the optimal interpolation method in connection with describing the f0F2 distribution for the intense ionospheric disturbance of 1 September 1958. The biharmonic analysis method is shown to be most effective in describing the irregular structure of the ionosphere.
