A neutral hydrogen survey was carried out with the 305 m telescope at the Arecibo Observatory of 84 galaxies with known redshift, classified E, S0, or Sa, and mostly situated in a rectangle of the sky which includes the Virgo cluster. Approximately 18 galaxies were detected. In the core of the Virgo cluster the detection probability for S0 galaxies is lower than in the surroundings. The average hydrogen mass per galaxy varies widely, but is lower in the core than outside and is not correlated with the optical luminosity. The hydrogen content of a galaxy is correlated with color and Hubble type, as suggested by previous authors. The RDDO classification scheme appears to be of value for predicting hydrogen content. The 'early' disk system categories appear to contain galaxies with very diverse properties.
