A near-infrared survey has been conducted of 1.4 square degrees (100 sq pc) of the L1641 dark cloud. Out of a total of 102 detections, photometry for 34 selected objects is carried out. The luminosity distribution of premain-sequence objects in L1641 is found to be similar to those in two other portions of the Orion region, L1630 and the inner Orion Nebula, in spite of a conspicuous stellar density contrast. The star formation efficiency in L1641 is estimated to be about 3 per cent and is comparable with that in Taurus which is about 5 per cent. It is considerably lower than that for the Chamaeleon dark cloud obtained by Hyland et al. (1982).
