Globular clusters, which are found in large numbers around all types of galaxies, are the closest analogues to simple stellar systems. It is now well established mainly on the basis of optical observations that the cluster systems of most nearby galaxies have bimodal metallicity distributions. This has led to interesting discussions about the galaxy assembly process. In order to get better constraints on the metallicities and ages of clusters and to test the predictions of stellar population models we have studied a sample of globular clusters in nearby galaxies over a wide baseline from the B band to 4.5 microns. Among other things our study shows that none of the commonly used stellar population models satisfactorily reproduce the energy distribution of globular clusters at redder wavelengths. This may have implications not only the analysis of globular clusters but on studies of high z objects and more complicated stellar systems.
