An analysis of a small solar flare was carried out using results of imaging H-alpha, UV, and X-ray observations of an active region in which a surge originated. The event started at 15:35 UT on November 7, 1980, from AR 2779. The flare associated with the surge, which lasted less than 5 min in soft X-rays, had three distinct energy releases, of which at least two appeared to result in mass motion into the corona. The overall energy transfer within the active region is examined. It is shown that the event is consistent with continuous energy release which becomes diverted to different parts of the region, and back, as the global event progresses.
