The UMIST/Preston multiple-mirror telescope or Multiple-Aperture Telescope (MAT) is a revolutionary new concept for a compact, relatively inexpensive optical telescope whose function will be photometry and spectroscopy from the average site. This paper briefly explains the optical reasoning behind the design, the telescope itself, proposed scientific research programmes and the progress to date.
