The nearby bright Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC 4151 has been well studied over many wavelengths. Observation data from the recently-launched Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observatories have facilitated a view of NGC 4151 heretofore unavailable, presenting a clearer picture of the physical state and evolution of this AGN. Using numerous observations from 2000-2007, I will detail the physical state and changes in the source and reflection continua, and the multiple absorption columns of NGC 4151.
NGC 4151 shows variation on several levels. During the study period, the continuum flux showed significant variation, peaking in a May 2003 observation. Previous studies have detected the existence of several absorption components in different stages of ionization and column density. The current analysis illustrates changes in opacity and ionization of the absorption columns above and beyond reactions to variations in continuum flux, suggesting bulk transverse motion of the columns themselves. In addition, variation is seen in reflection component constituents, particularly in the 6.4 keV Fe fluorescence line. Variability and associated time scales of these elements, among others, will be used to further constrain the physical picture of NGC 4151.
