New observations of Cygnus A made with the Cambridge 5-km radio telescope at 2.7, 5, 15.4, and 51.4 GHz are reported. The increased dynamic range over earlier 5-km maps at similar frequencies has permitted the mapping of spectral variations over a large proportion of the source. The spectra are found to steepen away from the hotspots, with the spectral index reaching a maximum of about two in the most extended structure. The variations are interpreted as the results of synchrotron aging making it possible to estimate the speed of advance of the hotspots. For each lobe the speed of the material relative to the hotspot is found to be about 0.1 c. Despite having polar maps at three frequencies it was not possible to determine the distribution of rotation measure across the source, although results confirmed earlier observational data.
