The hydrothermal synthesis of hedenbergite (CaFeSi 2 O 6 ) from a gel has been studied by Mössbauer and X-ray diffraction techniques. Mössbauer spectra taken at various stages show the reaction to be complete in a time much shorter than is evident from X-ray diffraction observations. It is concluded that the difference in time is that required for crystal growth from rapidly-formed domains of short-range order.
