A variant of the vector discriminant pattern recognition technique is applied to UK Schmidt telescope images of nebulae in the Large Magellanic Cloud. A criterion is thereby obtained which may be applied generally to distinguish between supernova remnants (SNRs) and H II regions from their optical images. Furthermore, two nebulae previously identified as H II regions are now interpreted as SNRs.
