Hst Proposal Id #7872 Clusters Of Galaxies And Cosmology

Scientific paper

We propose to obtain NIC3/F160W imaging of three rich galaxy clusters which we have identified at z ~ 1.2. Our existing WFPC2 imaging of these clusters has let us study the rest-- frame ultraviolet light from these galaxies. The proposed NICMOS imaging will allow us to morphologically classify the cluster galaxies at rest--frame optical wavelengths and to place them into the context of the Hubble Sequence. These samples and the combination of the new NICMOS and existing WFPC2 data will provide the means to 1} trace the evolution of ellipticals in rich clusters over the last ~7 Gyr; 2} investigate the early history of disk galaxies in clusters and of the Butcher--Oemler effect; and 3} study the dwarf galaxy population that may undergo dramatic luminosity and morphological evolution as the result of galaxy harassment.
