The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) was launched on 25 January 1983. From the data collected, a catalogue of infrared astronomical sources will be produced. A simulation of the IRAS mission has been developed which relies on the Monte Carlo method of statistical sampling to estimate the effect of mission alternatives and conditions on the completeness of the catalogue.
